  • 3 lb chuck roast
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 packet brown gravy mix
  • 1 packet onion soup mix
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • White bread or Texas toast, for serving
  • Prepared mashed potatoes, for serving

  1. Place the chuck roast in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together beef broth, brown gravy mix, onion soup mix, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Pour the gravy mixture over the roast.
  4. Cover and cook on LOW for 8–9 hours or HIGH for 4–5 hours, until beef is very tender.
  5. Remove beef and shred with two forks. Return shredded beef to the gravy and stir.
  6. To serve, place toasted bread on a plate, top with mashed potatoes, then spoon beef and gravy over the top.

Notes

For extra-rich gravy, stir in a cornstarch slurry during the last 30 minutes if needed. This dish is traditionally served open-faced and pairs well with green beans or corn.
