  • 1 1/2 lbs flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 3/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup beef broth or water
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, minced (or 1 tsp ground ginger)
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Optional garnish: sesame seeds

  1. Toss sliced beef with cornstarch until evenly coated.
  2. Place beef in the slow cooker.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, beef broth, garlic, ginger, hoisin sauce, and red pepper flakes.
  4. Pour sauce over the beef and stir gently to combine.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 4–5 hours or HIGH for 2–3 hours, until beef is tender.
  6. Stir well before serving to thicken the sauce.
  7. Serve over rice or noodles and garnish with green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

Slice beef against the grain for the most tender texture. For a thicker sauce, remove the lid during the last 30 minutes or add an extra teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with water.
