Ingredients

For the Cake Balls

  • 1 box vanilla cake mix
  • Ingredients needed for cake mix (eggs, oil, and water as directed)
  • 3/4 cup vanilla frosting
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

For the Coating

  • 12 oz white candy melts
  • 6 oz red candy melts
  • 6 oz blue candy melts
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil or shortening (optional, for thinning)

For Decoration

  • Red, white, and blue sprinkles
  • Edible glitter stars
  • White chocolate drizzle

Instructions

Instructions

  1. Bake the cake: Prepare the vanilla cake according to package directions. Let it cool completely before making the cake balls.
  2. Create the cake mixture: Crumble the cooled cake into fine crumbs in a large bowl.
  3. Add frosting: Mix in frosting gradually until the mixture becomes soft and easy to shape.
  4. Shape the cake balls: Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls and place them on a lined baking sheet. Chill for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Melt the candy coating: Melt the red, white, and blue candy melts separately according to package instructions.
  6. Coat the cake balls: Dip each chilled cake ball into the melted candy coating and place back on the baking sheet.
  7. Decorate and serve: Add patriotic sprinkles or drizzle with another candy color before the coating sets. Allow them to firm up before serving.

Notes

Cake balls can be made up to 3 days ahead and stored in the refrigerator. For easier dipping, keep the cake balls chilled while working in batches. You can customize the flavors with chocolate cake, red velvet cake, or strawberry cake for different holiday variations.
